The British government revealed a significant alteration in its travel regulations. As of 25th February 2026, travelers from a number of countries whose citizens do not require a visa will not be allowed to enter the UK without pre-approval. A request for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) has to be made by them before their journey. The impetus behind this move is to tighten up immigration control and to have a completely digital UK border by the next few years. The UK introduces a Digital Entry Pass for Global Travellers to require pre-approval and strengthen border security.
Before, citizens of 85 different countries such as the US, Canada, and France were able to go to the UK without needing to get an application in advance. However, according to the recent regulations, they are required to obtain an ETA prior to their flights. This consent via the internet will be similar to a temporary entry permit in digital form.

As the Indian travelers require visas from different categories for a trip to the UK, this modification has no effect on the citizens of India.
Based on a statement of Mike Tapp, who is in charge of Migration and Citizenship, the UK will have more control over the incoming people with the help of ETA. It allows the identification of risks before time and stops a person who intends to harm from getting to the UK land.
The government also asserts that ETA is going to make the travel experience better. For a digital system, it would mean that the verification process is fast and that there is less paperwork for millions of travelers.
The UK Home Office commented that the regulation is the significant move to achieving a touchless border in the coming years. It implies that travelers could be waived from the necessity of a physical display of documents at the airport in the near future.
Starting 2026, a person travelling to the UK has to have either:
Flights will not be allowed to take a passenger on board unless ETA is checked and approved by the airline.
The ETA system came into effect in October 2023 and has been used by more than 13.3 million visitors for expedited travel processing.
The authorities have included a cautionary message to people with two nationalities, stating that if one of their passports is British, they ought to use it when travelling to prevent encountering difficulties at the check-in counter.
Any traveller who:
1. is exempt from a visa for short stays (up to 6 months), and
2. does not have a long-term immigration permit
is going to have to get an ETA if they want to reach the UK.
A significant change to the UK’s digital immigration management system is being introduced through a new electronic travel authorization regulation. Firstly, the process is considered straightforward and economical. However, starting from February 2026, it will be made compulsory for a large number of travellers. Meanwhile, Indian nationals are still not required to follow it. On the other hand, travellers from other countries will have to comply with this new method in order to enter the UK without any problems. Therefore, proper adherence is expected to ensure smooth entry into the country.
From 25 February 2026 onwards, travellers from countries that do not require a visa will have to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to their arrival in the UK.
No. Indians still have to get a visa to enter the UK, so the ETA rule is not relevant to them.
Such a person is a short-stay visa-exempt individual (up to 6 months) without the long-term immigration status of the UK.
They must do it via the official UK ETA application, and the price is £16.
